- Originality, clarity, and how well it fits into current research in the field
- How well it ties in with the goals of the overall degree
- Treatment of topic
- Knowledge of the topic (plus earlier research)
- Appropriateness of approach and method chosen
- Consistency of structure and reasoning
- Maturity of thought
- Clarity, naturalness, and level of language used
- Appropriate use of sources and references
- Additional factors to be considered:
- Whether the research brings new perspectives to the field
- The ethical basis for the written component
