Writing a Written Component for an Artistic Doctoral Degree: Writing

This guide provides instructions for preparing the written component of an artistic doctorate at the Sibelius Academy.

Writing

In this section, we will go through the key issues of structure and style involved in preparing a written component. To supplement these guidelines, we have also included writing drills and exercises in the section of this guide titled Help with Writing.

Written component inspectors will pay attention to the following issues, and thus it is probably a good idea to keep them in mind when preparing a written component:

  • Written Component topic
  • Originality, clarity, and how well it fits into current research in the field
  • How well it ties in with the goals of the overall degree
  • Treatment of topic
  • Knowledge of the topic (plus earlier research)
  • Appropriateness of approach and method chosen
  • Consistency of structure and reasoning
  • Maturity of thought
  • Clarity, naturalness, and level of language used
  • Appropriate use of sources and references
  • Additional factors to be considered:
  • Whether the research brings new perspectives to the field
  • The ethical basis for the written component
