Based on the recommendation of the doctoral candidate's Contact Teacher, the Head of the Performing Arts Research Centre (Tutke) nominates one or two supervisors for each doctoral candidate. The doctoral candidate is expected to discuss the responsibilities and duties of each party with the supervisors and the Contact Teacher.
The doctoral candidate is responsible for negotiating with the supervisor(s) how the supervision will be carried out. If the doctoral candidate has more than one supervisor, it may be useful to outline the distribution of responsibilities between supervisors.
The supervisor's duty is to guide the doctoral candidate in creating a personal study plan and in crafting, complying with and updating the doctoral candidate's research plan. If aspects of the research plan change, these have to be approved by the Contact Teacher at Tutke (major changes are approved by the Head of Tutke). The supervisors also guide the planning and execution of the artistic parts of the doctoral research and in writing the commentary. They should encourage the doctoral candidate in her/his independent studies and help them with the preparation of publications, presentations and performances as well as creating contacts in the research and art communities.
By default, a supervisor is nominated for six years from the beginning of the doctoral candidate's studies. External supervisors can offer supervision for a maximum of 20 hours/year/supervisor.
