Tutke Guide: 2. Layout and printing processes of the commentary of the doctoral research

2. Layout and printing processes of the commentary of the doctoral research

After the Research Council has granted the permission to examine the research, preparations for the public examination start, as well as the layout and printing processes of the doctoral research. The time required for this phase is approximately two months. Several parties are involved in the process. The arrangements are discussed in a joint meeting with the defender, the publication services, and Tutke. The publication specialist takes care of the publication process and offers guidance on the publication process. Separate instructions are available on publishing  an article-based doctoral research. If you wish to publish your doctoral research online on the Acta Scenica web-page or in the Research Council, contact Tutke's planning officer.

At least the abstract and metadata of the doctoral research are added to the Taju repository of Uniarts Helsinki. The materials should be sent to the publication specialist, who delivers them to the library for uploading. Taju hosts PDF files and links to materials that are openly available on the internet (e.g. an artistic part or a commentary in Research Catalogue). The PDFs may also include web links.

2.1 Abstract (separate writing instructions)

The commentary includes abstracts in Finnish or Swedish and in English. Instructions on writing the abstract are attached to this document (appendix).

2.2 Number of copies

The commentary of the doctoral research is printed in 120 copies, of which the defender receives 20 copies. The defender can order extra copies of the doctoral research on his or her own expense.

2.3 Back-cover text

If the commentary is published as a printed book, the defender writes a short blurb for the back cover. This should be a concise text about the contents of the research. The style of the text is more popular and less detailed that in the abstract.

The text on the back flap can be created by answering the following questions:

  • What is the topic of your research, and what are your findings?
  • How does this research contribute to the current research and the scientific discussion in its field?
  • What would you emphasize in your research: for example, a finding or a method?
  • What is your background as a researcher / teacher?
