Writing a Doctoral Arts Thesis at the MuTri Doctoral School: Once the Text is Ready…

Once the Text is Ready...

  • Write it up neatly, check through it, and proof read it. Remove any double spaces by using the “find and replace” function. It is also good to get it professionally proof read by somebody else at this point and to have the “nippupäivä” (mock defence). These both provide an excellent way to get an outside opinion on the content of the thesis before the actual preliminary examination.
  • If you have not already, send the transcript to a proofreader.
  • After you’ve made the necessary corrections, submit the thesis for the preliminary examiners to check.
  • Do the corrections required after the preliminary examination (in discussion with your supervisor).
  • After this the thesis will be printed.
  • Send the requested number of printed theses forward to be read or reviewed.
  • Most theses and all the abstracts must be submitted to the library in electronic form. Check that the text is in the correct format for doing this, and send it in the format(s) requested.
  • Be aware of the time limits specified for the thesis examination, and note that theses are not given preliminary examinations, read, or even checked outside the teaching year.

In the future, the more detailed instructions for finishing and publishing your thesis will be in the English version of the MuTri handbook, in the section five: http://www.uniarts.fi/5-tohtorintutkinnon-valmistuminen. (The translation of the guide has not been completed yet.) Your contact person during the latter stages of submitting your thesis at MuTri is the Senior Planning Officer Hannu Tolvanen: keep him up to date at every stage of the process.
