Guide for teachers: Course material

Course material in the Uniarts Helsinki Library

The library makes acquisitions based on notifications submitted by teachers concerning course material that they use. This material can be books, sheet music, articles or AV material. The library aims at providing a course material selection that is cost-efficient and serves teaching as successfully and flexibly as possible. The price and availability of the material limits the number of acquisitions that can be made.

Teachers: A convenient way to notify the library of your course material is by submitting an acquisition request for course material.

Please check first in Arsca or library's A-Z Databases if the material you are proposing is already available at University of the Arts Helsinki library.

The delivery time for material may be long, so please make the acquisition request in good time.
If the material that has been reported as course material or as supplementary reading is not available or if the acquisition is not possible for the library due to other reasons, the library will contact the person who made the request.

Also remember that there are other libraries in the city, too. Encourage your students to utilise the selection of these libraries, as well, during times when course books are in especially high demand.

Books

Find the book in Arsca!

You can find both printed books and e-books in Arsca.

E-books

The library determines the number of course material books that it acquires on a case-by-case basis. The acquisitions are primarily e-books. This enables flexible customer use, as most e-books can be used simultaneously. Customers can use e-books with their Uniarts account. You can find more detailed user instructions in the E-books Guide.
Note: All books are not available as e-books, or they are not available for library use as e-books.
Publishers and online stores provide e-books primarily to private individuals; libraries must acquire licences to be able to offer e-books for library use, and this is not possible for all books.

The library acquires Finnish e-books from the Ellibs service. In principle, the library acquires one-user licences, which means that only one customer at a time can use a specific e-book.
The loan period for Ellibs books is 1 day or 7 days.
It may be possible to get licences for multiple users of Ellibs books. Notify the library if this is necessary.

Printed books

Printed books are acquired on a case-by-case basis, and the number varies between 1 and 5 copies depending on the reported number of participants on the course. The library will acquire the latest edition of the book. It is not always possible to acquire a book if it is sold out or extremely expensive. The library has a limited budget for new acquisitions.

Sheet music

Printed sheet music

You can find information on the availability of printed sheet music in Arsca.

When it comes to the sheet music of individual works, usually only printed versions can be acquired.  The number of copies that will be acquired varies on a case-by-case basis.
The library makes orders for choir and orchestra material only for the use of productions by Uniarts Helsinki (and by Savonia in Kuopio). Submit the acquisition request in good time because the delivery time of this kind of material can be long.

Digital sheet music

The library provides access to digital sheet music via the electronic sheet music services that are included in its selection at the time. Using digital sheet music services requires a log-in with the Uniarts account.
The library cannot acquire the digital sheet music of an individual work from outside of the services that are part of its current service selection.

Audio-visual materials

Physical recordings

You can find information on the availability of physical audio-visual materials in Arsca.

The library usually acquires only one copy of a physical recording.
The library obeys copyrights and can therefor only acquire video recordings with a licence for library use.

Audio-visual materials in electronic services

The library provides access to digital audio-visual materials via the electronic services that are included in its selection at the time. Using digital audio-visual materials requires a log-in with the Uniarts account.

The library cannot acquire single digital recordings (audio or video) from outside of the services that are part of its current service selection.
