RefWorks guide: Creating a RefWorks account

Creating a user account in RefWorks

There are two different ways to create a RefWorks account. You can create an account using your uniarts email address (Create account), or use the sign-on service of the University of the Arts Helsinki (Login with your institutional credentials).

Instructions for creating an account are available on this page.

Go to RefWorks

Alternative 1

Create account

Choose "Create account":

RefWorks sign in page.

Write your email address in the field and click on “Check”:

E-mail address box.

Choose a password, enter it to the field, and click on “Sign up”:

Page for entering a password.

You’ll receive instructions for activating your account in an e-mail:

"Activation email sent" notification.

A confirmation message for account activation.

Click on the link in the e-mail, enter the requested information and click on "Next":

A form requesting personal information.

Your account has now been set up and you can start using Refworks.

Alternative 2

Login with your institution’s credentials

Select "Login with your institution’s credentials":

RefWorks sign in page.

Select "University of the Arts Helsinki” from the drop-down menu:

"Use login from my institution" drop-down menu.

You’ll be automatically redirected to the University of the Arts Helsinki sign-on service. Use your uniarts ID and password:

Uniarts login page.

Fill in your email address in the field:

"Enter your university email to begin" form.

Enter the requested information and click on "Next":

A form requesting personal information.

Your account has now been set up and you can start using Refworks.

Alternative 1+2

If you login with your institution's credentials (= Uniarts login) you can add an alternate password afterwards, so that you can login with your username (e-mail address) and your password.

NB! Write-N-Cite and Cite in Google Docs add-ons only support logging in with a RefWorks account (Alternative 1).

You can add the alternate password in RefWorks settings > Alternate password.

Option for alternate password in RefWorks settings.

Using RefWorks after graduation

You can use RefWorks after you graduate:

  1. Go to RefWorks settings.
  2. Change your Role to Alumnus/alumna. Save your settings after every edit to make sure they are registered.
  3. Change your e-mail address to something else than uniarts-email.

If you have created your account using Login with your institution's credentials, follow step 4. If you already have created a RefWorks account, go to step 5.

  1. Scroll down to Institution credentials. Click Remove credential and save/add a new password if prompted.
  2. Login with your e-mail address and password in the future.

If you continue your studies in Uniarts later (e.g. as a graduate student) and want to login using Uniarts credentials, add your credentials from Associate credentials, and make the rest of the above changes in reverse order.
